General Sir George Don (1756 - 1832) has been neglected by historians, but his career shows that he was a worthy forerunner to the great Victorian colonial administrators. His achievements in Gibraltar (1814 - 1831) where he transformed a derelict and disease- ridden town into a well - run and pleasant one. His seventeen years as Lieutenant Governorof Gibraltar saw the beginning of a Gibraltarian sense of identity.
