The Rock Under a Cloud (Charles Caruana)
Many authors have written about the Rock from the viewpoint of its flora and fauna, its fortifications and sieges, its military role. Some have made an occasional reference to its civilian population, though for at least one author Gibraltarian society consisted solely of British officers and thier families. Writers in more recent times have indeed recognized the existence of civilians upon the Rock, some being inclined to look upon them as hybrids, bastards, smugglers, "panzistas", people with no identity or culture of their own, people without a history.
This book focuses attention on the leaders (priests, bishops and religious) of a particular group - the Roman Catholics, a majority group on the Rock
