Six Memoirs of a Childhood in Gibraltar (David Chevasco)
Six Memoirs of a Childhood in Gibraltar are six semi-autobiographic, 1000-word short stories about the author's experiences growing up in the overseas British territory of Gibraltar. They are written from a child's perspective, with subtle references to more serious issues, such as mental health, family discord, and cross-border politics. Each short story depicts either a particular phase of the author's childhood, a description of a place of particular emotional significance, or an activity that the author and his family members would engage in during this period of his life. The stories are written in English, and there are a limited number of Spanish words used, especially when referring to the author's grandparents, who are speakers of Spanish. The real names of the characters have been changed, with the exception of a few real names of people who have passed away. Words in bold, including Spanish words, have been glossed at the end of each short story.
The collection of short stories has the dual motive of both informing or reminding the reader of what life was like growing up in Gibraltar in the 1980s, and of acting as a collection of short stories for either English-speaking children, adults, or intermediate to advanced learners of English. To this end, each short story includes a glossary of the words that would be 'out-of-level' for an upper-intermediate learner of English, and also includes ten comprehension questions. Answers to these questions can be found at the back of the book.
